Finally, a run I felt good about! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I was tired and my knees were throbbing, but I wasn’t on the verge of tears. 17.5 miles is a long way to go when all you’ve got is your two legs and some serious motivation (or stubbornness) to get you there. Today we ran part of the New York City marathon run- up through Williamsburg and into Queens- to the 59th st. (Queensboro) Bridge and back.
For the most part we were dodging Hasidic Jews on their way to temple at 8.30 on the way out and Hipsters on their way to brunch at 11 on the way back. It was an adventure.
We made it to the base of the incredible Queensboro bridge, which is referenced in several literary works and notable films. Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby; “The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge,” Nick says, “is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world”.
And then of course Woody Allen created the iconic image below in his movie, “Manhattan”.
New York City is just such a cool place, when on the 3 mile stretch of Bedford Street you can run into so many interesting characters. This morning, even with a little pain, I was loving it.
